1-3:30pm Taking a Peak Behind the Curtain: Identifying the Categories of Forensic Patients Evaluated in the Emergency Department
Clinical forensic nursing is the application of forensic medicine and science principles and practices to questions of the law in the investigation of trauma and violence involving living victims. It is important for emergency department nurses to think more about the legal issues surrounding their patients and applying this concept to the proper processing of forensic evidence. By identifying the categories of forensic patients evaluated in the emergency department, the ED nurse will be better prepared to initiate mandated reports, collect appropriate forensic evidence, document the facts of incidences, and photodocument the injuries sustained by their patients.
Speaker: Georgia Pasqualone, BSN, MSFS, MSN

Anatomical review of the skeleto-muscular and vascular structures of the neck will address potential complications arising from a strangulation assault. First responder assessment will be addressed, including law enforcement documentation and review of environment. The development of clinical sequelae over the hours and days following the event will illustrate the efficacy of clinical caution with patient management and education.
